Staff Welcome: Kristin Vamenta

A welcome to Kristin Vamenta! Kristin (She/They) joined our team in February as our Studio Coordinator. We are so grateful to have Kristin on our team acting as our admin whiz! Chances are if you’ve reached out to us through email or taken a class in the last few months, you’ve talked to Kristin. Already they have managed scholarships, helped with our latest class releases and worked at the studio during events and conferences.

We asked Kristin a few questions about their life so you can get to know the amazing people who make Hand / Thrown what it is.

HAND / THROWN Tell us a little bit about you!

KRISTIN VAMENTA: I’m new to clay! I'm more of a paper pusher or file wrangler than an artist, but I've always been drawn to crafts and making things.  Aside from supporting studio operations, I work with reproductive justice and gender justice organizations as a trainer, technology strategist, and data projects consultant. I delight in cooking for loved ones, making well-organized spreadsheets, having conversations about power and consent, and building community through creative expression.

HT: What’s your sign?

KV: Virgo

HT: What drew you to the role of Studio Coordinator?

KV: I took a few handbuilding classes at Hand / Thrown in 2023 after wanting to try pottery for years. Each time I was in the studio, I felt welcomed and supported in trying something new. The job sounded fun -- not only because I would get to learn more about working with clay, but also because I would get to help create a nurturing experience for my fellow learners. I've been enjoying the chance to work in a creative setting, which is a first for me!

H/ T What is your favorite Richmond spot?

KV: Birdhouse Farmers Market

HT: Describe your favorite piece of pottery (currently).

KV: In a Ceramic Animals class a few months ago, I made a green cat figure that was (very roughly) based on one of my cats. She likes to loaf with one front leg stretched out, and I was pleasantly surprised that some of her attitude came through in the piece!
