Support Our Mission
Clay is a beautiful thing, and we hope that everyone who wants to experience the joy of working with clay at Hand / Thrown can have the opportunity to do so. We strive to build a creative, accessible and more equitable space for everyone within our walls. Enabling artists of underrepresented communities to feel welcomed in our community is of the utmost importance to us, and you can help.
HELP SUSTAIN AND EXPAND our SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMING
Our scholarships fund one day classes, workshops, and multi-week classes in the studio and cover the cost of tuition, firing and studio access for BIPOC and LGBTQIA students. Your contribution will go directly towards holding a spot in class for these students, as well as free community events for the Brookland Park neighborhood. Just a small donation could help realize someones dream of working with clay for the first time, or help sustain an ongoing love of the ceramic arts. Any amount helps! By making a donation to our scholarship programming, you’re helping us realize our dream of a truly diverse ceramics studio space in the city of Richmond, VA.
Scholarships help us ensure that those who want to be active in our community can be, without finance as a barrier. Too often, working with clay isn't accessible for a lot of our community members. But at Hand / Thrown, we are committed to working to close that gap. We offer a set number of scholarships for multi-week classes and one-day workshops each session, but we want to do more--and can, with your help! All funds received towards scholarships give us the flexibility to create additional paid spots in classes across our curriculum. This flexibility means not only that we can create additional opportunities for students, but also that we can give students even more choices. We hope you will join us in our endeavor to continue to make this space as equitable, inclusive, and wildly creative as possible.
Your contribution makes a difference!
one day classes
From our Give it a shot! Wheel Throwing class to Hand-built Vases and Flower Arranging, there is a one day class for all clay enthusiasts! You can specify which class you’d like to sponsor on our donation form or sponsor a few to spread the love a little further. These classes are a great entry point for beginners who want to try their hand at clay before committing to a longer multi-week session. Classes start at $40, and go up to $125.
MULTI-WEEK CLASSES
Our beginner, intermediate and advanced classes in wheel throwing and handbuilding range from 6-8 weeks in length. We recently added Slip Casting, Surface Design, and a weekend Intensive to our roster and hope to add more specialty classes in the future. These classes are a great fit for beginners or experienced artists hoping to pick up a few new tips and tricks along the way. Classes start at $300 and go up to $320 for the full multi-week session.
